Kristen Wood, CEO and creator of The Ten Spot Beauty Bar, is committed to the Queen West neighbourhood. In fact, back when she was thinking of starting a business, her first thought was that she wanted it to be on Queen Street.
The year was 2006 and although her training was in graphic design, Kristen recognized that something was missing in the spa/salon services offered in Toronto. “At the time, the spa landscape was either low-end chop shops or very expensive spas,” says Kristen. “There was nothing in between.”
While she didn’t have a beauty background, Kristen had a feeling that even if clients only had an hour to spare for a manicure, they still wanted to have an experience. “For me, I wanted great service and efficiency,” says Kristen. “So I took the best of those two categories.”
Once Kristen locked in on the concept, it only took her three months to open The Ten Spot, a cool, urban “anti-spa” specializing in manicures, pedicures, waxing and facials. The salon was an immediate hit not just for the quality of its services, but also for its fun, communal vibe. Visitors can relax and watch a movie while getting a manicure or chat with their neighbours and nail technician. Group visits are encouraged, and you can even book the space for a private party.
The group of The Ten Spot spas in the city (10 locations in Toronto) is one of the city’s hottest go-to spots when it comes to pampering yourself. Show up early so you can start your appointment off with a coffee or tea before settling into one of the chairs for your service. They’ve got a full menu of spa services you can choose from, and definitely welcome guys into the fold, too. If you’re getting waxed, take your mind off things by watching your favourite movie on the wall-mounted flat screen TV.
This is one of the hippest spa franchises in the city, with young staff earnestly trying to do the best possible job and a line of spa products designed to work on a number of body parts. Once you step inside one of their fresh and clean spas, you’ll be tempted to skip the at-home day and relax in the hands of a pro. But one look at their shelves of reasonably-priced products will have you splurging on a new line of at-home beauty essentials.
They’re urban, they’re hip and they’re conveniently located on Queen Street just west of Bathurst (or at multiple other locations around the downtown). When you arrive, you’ll be offered a beverage and a small snack. It’ll be tempting to pick up one of the many magazines or watch sitcoms on the TV, but you came here for a purpose and that’s to have your nails done in style. You’ll have to make an appointment online before going in, but doing it that way lets you pick your nail tech.
