Louise Cooper has always had a love affair with vintage clothes. In 2004 she started collecting with the intention of opening her own vintage clothing store. That dream came true a couple of years later when she opened The Cat’s Meow on Avenue Road. “[Vintage clothing] was unique. It was recycling. It was a great thing to do,” says Louise. “You stood out from other people. Other people couldn’t purchase it. I kind of got hooked on it.”
The Cat’s Meow specializes in the 50’s and 60’s eras but also features designer couture from as far back as the 20’s. Louise sometimes even stumbles across stuff from the Victorian era. She believes that if something is made well, it lasts, and if it's lasted, it's because someone treasured it enough to take care of it.
Trendy designer clothing and accessories quickly go out of style and can end up buried in your closet before the fashion cycle turns and they’re wearable again. You can avoid that here by consigning your designer wares. The Cat’s Meow focuses on clothes and accessories from the ‘20s to the ‘80s, with a strong emphasis on the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s. You can find hats, handbags, jewellery and clothing from a variety of labels, as well as hidden gems.
Sometimes going out is all about finding the right dress. From sexy body-con numbers to fun and flirty sundresses, these Toronto boutiques carry stylish frocks at a variety of different price points.
