Bakka Phoenix Books first opened in 1972, making it one of the first Science Fiction and Fantasy specialty bookstores in the country. It eventually became a central hub for sci-fi and fantasy fans, and illustrious former employees include authors Robert J. Sawyer, Cory Doctorow, Fiona Patton, Tanya Huff, Nalo Hopkinson, and Karina Summer-Smith. Current owner, and long time fan of the sci-fi and fantasy genres, Ben Freiman bought it in 2003 when he learned its owner was planning to retire.
In 2010, Ben moved Bakka Phoenix Books into a building he owns in the Annex. Not only is the location convenient, but being in its own building gave the store control over renovations and removed the worry over rent. That stability has been an important part of the store's success. “It’s a responsibility to the name, to the legacy, and to the community of customers and fans that exist around the store,” says Ben.
Is there anything cooler than meeting and having your favourite author sign your novel? This sci-fi/ fantasy bookstore on Harbord regularly invites authors to host events, knowing how important it is to connect readers and writers. Unlike most bookstores, Bakka Phoenix maintains a web blog that’s written by employees who offer their personal reviews and recommendations. As well as listing new titles, they keep readers up to date on store and staff news.
