There have been a lot of changes over the past century that Barrymore Furniture has had to deal with, but one thing that has stayed consistent has been the company’s commitment to quality. It started as the Toronto Rattan Company in 1919 making rattan furniture, and by the 1930s fully upholstered furniture was made and called Barrymore. Enter Tom Callahan who bought it in 1982, attracted by their high-quality products and great name.
Since then Barrymore Furniture has continued manufacturing handcrafted sofas, chairs and home furnishings with meticulous attention to detail. It resisted the move toward making inexpensive furniture, instead staying with the high-end market. “We’ve done well because we stayed higher end,” says Tom. “Staying in that niche has really helped us.”
