We love this place! It is pub food with a warm atmosphere. The entertainment on Sunday afternoons is great. Jack Dekuyser, Johnny Max etc. It has become our local pub.
I can hardly believe this place is still operating...The one and only one staff member in the dining area was also covering the bar, and spent more time yapping with the drunks at the bar then anything else. Trying to get her attention was nearly impossible and when we finally did, she had an attitude like we were somehow inconveniencing her!? We could also hear her and the cook in the kitchen arguing about something. I could ALSO see the waitress/bartender stealing fries off my plate in the kitchen just prior to bringing it to our table. I was so shocked and was too embarrassed about it to even bring it up with her. I mean come on!?!? When we first walked in I made the mistake of walking through to the kitchen (thinking they were doors to the washrooms). If I had used better judgement, I should have just immediately left the place with my wife....although I only saw the kitchen for a couple seconds it was more than enough time to realize that it was WAY dirtier than it ought to be. Burger was so-so....was missing the cheese on it, the caesar salad was soooo drowning in dressing that I couldn't finish it. My wife had the wings and said they were very average and a sort of warmish. My beer was fine, my wife's gingerale glass apparently tasted like the sanitizing stuff they use in the glass cleaning machine *YUCK!*. I had a coffee which had clearly been sitting out all afternoon....burnt tasting and went that gross muddy colour when you add the milk.
I cannot express how disappointed our group was with the service at the Markland. The Markland was undergoing some renovations so our group has been frequenting another establishment in the meantime but returned last evening to what was our favourite pub. We have been going to the Markland over the years on a very regular basis and had looked forward to returning. The service was terrible. It took forever to get our food order and even when it did arrive it was wrong. I ordered a glass of wine and was told there were no wine glasses so I waited until one was washed. A coffee was ordered and my husband was told there was no milk for the coffee, only cream. The roast beef dip turned out to be a hot roast beef sandwich. The caesar salad was iceberg lettuce only with caesar dressing on top. The wings were so long in coming that some of our group actually wanted to walk out. The restaurant was not extremely busy last evening, even with another table of approximately 12 who had already gotten their food. There was only 1 waitress for the restaurant and another behind the bar. When asked about the delay the waitress responded "There's only so much I can do" rather than apologize for the delay and follow up on it. Unfortunately we will not be returning to the Markland and again cannot express how disappointed we were about a place we had so much enjoyed in the past. I wish they had left it the way it was in the beginning as we had always had great service and good food we could count on.
