Delicious Burritos! I cannot even finish one before I am full! Unfortunately the waiting area for food is the same size as my closet but as long as the food remains as good as it is I will still keep going!
C'mon people - it's fresh, it's been consistently great for years! Find me this kind of real flavour anywhere else. A proud Guelph tradition!
Both items that were ordered were good in terms of taste. After a long time we went to a spanish place to eat. We where visiting Guelph and decided to eat here. Its a very small place which seems to remind of hippy times with the way they have presented themselves - peace and expression.
While I prefer offerings from Toronto (unfair), Salsateria burritos and offerings are great for the area and especially welcome to me at say, 2am. But sometimes based on who is working they can be great, or lacking. When they moved to a sit down restaurant where Cafe Aquarius used to be, the meals were decent but not phenomenal, and the location wasn't helpful. They've since moved back into a take-out location and also expanded into Van Gogh's bar section for breakfast/lunch and I'm glad they did. After living in guelph for 6 years and going out for breakfast most weekend, I have to say salsateria is my favorite place in Guelph/Kitchener-Waterloo/Cambridge It's a change from the usual eggs/bacon trip, and it tastes great. The only disappointing thing someone in our group got was quessadillas (they were just cheese? there's another one that must be better..), which weren't from the breakfast menu so we immediately chastised our friend when they were unhappy. I've had everything on the breakfast menu at this point and I have not been disappointed once. And the coffee is good. You can go stand in line at Egg-Cetera for the usual or you can go have something great and get a table at any time. The booths are super comfortable. I live in Kitchener and drive to guelph to go. case closed
Food is good but the service is slow. They have expanded their business without adding more staff. The staff work hard, but they only had 2 people in the kitchen for the restaurant and 1 for the take out. It took 30 minutes at the take out location to get a cheese quesadilla.
I have lived in Guelph for 6 years and Salsateria is still my favorite take out. Lets talk Nachos- Fresh and crispy, cilantro salsa, creamy pamento sauce. Honestly the best thing I have ever tasted. I usually order the Jerk chicken, and over the years it has changed in size and price, but the excellent taste hasn't changed a bit. Now it is a very generous portion and they always make it with just the right heat for me! They have this spiced juice I can't think of the name of it, but it is the perfect drink on a warm summer day. The staff is always very attentive and they always get your order right. I love to get salsa for take home too, I could basically live off that stuff!
This is a great take out establishment in guelph. Their burritos & quesadillas are amazing. The flavors in their toppings are delicious. Its a bit pricey, but worth the treat every once and a while.
Food was ok, however the only thing that is holding me back from ever coming here again was the fact that the girl behind the cash took our money and then went to prepare our food without washing her hands. Gross. We watched her continue to do the same to others after us as well. Not very sanitary at all.
The food here is great, no doubt, and I'm glad that the Salsateria is alive and (sorta) kicking. I was really disappointed that the actual, sit-down restaurant folded after, what, two weeks? While I don't mind coming in for take-out, it would be nice to have a good, sit-down meal with a beer to wash it down. As it is now, you practically get elbowed in the ribs by the take-out crowd. Great food - latin type dishes are a rarity in Guelph - I just wish the concept would grow up a bit....
Salsateria is now beautiful, well-designed, intimate and amazing. The salsa is the same, the pimiento sauce, and the prices are unbelievably low. For example, you can get a burrito (meat) for $5 and a side of nachos for $1. Again, the place is beautiful (although there is no sitting space). I got a jerk chicken wrap with rice and bean sides, two sauces, and a order of nachos for 8.50, tax included. Great for students on a budget needing real food. The wraps are a bit different - not as crispy, and I do miss have the rice on the side. But all in all, really glad Salsateria's back. GREAT value.
There was a lot of hype about this restaurant and they were definitely right! The jerk chicken was really good, however they did mess up my order at the beginning but the comped the meal, which made up for the mistake.
Jerk chicken is amazing. The salsa is amazing. The service was perfect. The vocalist/pianist topped it all off. A classy date in a perfect atmosphere.
The Salsateria is a special venue with heart. I love the location - upstairs and secluded from mainstream traffic. The atmosphere is friendly and large outdoor patio a fantastic bonus. Count on listening to good music.
I'm really sad to be saying this, as I loved the old location and food. There has definitely been a change in portions as well as the food quality since moving. I found the new location felt awkward (we sat outside) and the flooring is roofing material! If they were aiming for a real "Chilean" experience, as in, a lower class than is expected here... they hit it! The server seemed nice, but forgot to give us cutlery, gave me a glass that was dirty and was difficult to wave down. Also, the owner was sitting about 15 ft away from our table smoking. I am a non-smoker but usually fairly tolerant, but not when I'm eating! The only way I'd go back is to see a performer...
Great new location! Food was great, except the soup had a blue cheese-cream garnish, and I am not a fan of blue cheese, which why I gave it a lower rating. The wrap was made with fresh veggies, and the sides were great! This was a huge meal, for a great price. Can't wait to come back for dinner!
I ate in the old location frequently, and loved it. I had heard bad things about the new location, but figured I would give it a chance anyhow. It was pathetic. The portions have been cut, and the burrito was nowhere near as good as it used to be. There was no option to have it outside of a 'dinner', so it cost $9.50 before tax. That price would have been high if the food was good, but it was terrible, and so the price was just insulting. The rice was undercooked. The salad was repulsive -- no dressing, and vegetables that definitely were not fresh. To complement the bean burrito there was... a serving of cold black beans. These came straight from the can and onto my plate, so far as I can tell. The burrito was more or less cold by the time it hit my table. The bottom of it was unpleasantly crunchy -- totally unlike the old Salsateria burritos. Moral: jacking up your prices and lowering your quality to pay for your huge new location is not cool. Avoid.
I went to the University of Guelph for 4 years and that when I discovered and grew to love this restaurant. They made it every early Saturday morning to the Farmers Market so locals could sample their goods. Sooo tasty, authentic, nothing processed here! I still make sure to go by the Salsateria every time I'm in or passing through Guelph and have passed on positive word of mouth, creating big fans here in Niagara! I do not feel the new location deserves the bad press everyone is posting. Viva Salsateria!!!
very disappointed today. the portions have been seriously cut. smaller plates and only about 6 or 7 chips. a major difference from only 2 weeks ago.
I stopped in thinking I'd order my regular jerk chicken to go, but then decided against it and had a sit-down meal. For $15 I had the dig-in downtown lunch which included soup, salad, main course and dessert. The main course was beef in a wrap that was amazing. I thought it was going to be ground beef, but was pleasantly surprised with the quality of roast beef in the meal. The portions were more than adequate and I had to bring my dessert home with me. I would most definitely refer others to Salsateria!
I was so incredibly disappointed with this place today. I usually run to Salsateria on my lunch break. Their old location on Cork st was wonderful, because I could get there, and back with time to eat my lunch back at my office. Today though, when I go there, there was a sign saying that it was closed for renovations. I then rushed to the new location, and ordered a jerk chicken wrap with chips and salsa to go. I had to ask how long it would be, and it was going to be 10 minutes, because they now heat everything, instead of microwaving. I had stupidly already paid (otherwise I would have left), and I had to ask for it to be microwaved instead. When I got back to my office, I discovered that they have changed their chips, no longer the corn ones, but cheap tasting, oily and thin, and I got less than ten of them. The salsa tasted normal, but the chips were really, really disappointing. Further more, when I cut open my jerk chicken wrap, I made the mistake of actually looking at the chicken. It looked gross, like it was of low quality. I forced myself to eat it, because there was no time for me to go and get something else. I feel really sick now. I agree with someone else about the new recipe for the jerk chicken, why fix it if it wasn't broke. I feel like that sentement could be extended to the entire place. It was good, and it was yummy and FAST, but no more. Did I mention that it was $9.00???? Not worth the money and the effort. I will never go back again.
