Best Around

I have been to the Press Gang many times and I am never disappointed. My favorite is 'The Drill', the chef decides based on the wine preference. Location, ambience and service is bar none. My favorite 'night out' place to dine - plan for a good two hours, NOT a quick fix for hunger unless you order several appetizers to share with a glass of wine. The menu is pricey, but not over the top.

The Press Gang is in the Big Leagues. Located...

The Press Gang is in the Big Leagues. Located in a charming, old-world stone cellar, this little gem is a romantic getaway. The service is friendly and professional, and the ambiance is glowy and warm, enahanced by grand piano easy jazz. The wine list touches on all the basics, and the food is delicious, fine continental cuisine. The oysters are the highlight, though. It's the only place in the city to get the delectable large Shan-Daph oyster. Accompanied with a flawless vodka martini, these are the best oysters you'll ever have!

A wonderful restaurant in the heart of Halifax

My wife and I were walking around Halifax looking for a place for dinner. After looking at the menu, we opted for the Press Gang. The mussels with cooked in blue cheese sherry cream...a rather intriguing combination that really did work!! I had the two oyster appetizers as a main dish. A couple of the Rockefeller oysters had a touch too much pernod. The Oysters Rainmen had bacon on them...ehh...just OK. I should have had the scallops entree. I saw a plate go by and I swear they looked the size of hockey pucks. My wife had a lamb curry on a puff pastry tart. It was a featured appetizer and was "absolutely yummy" (my wife's words). She then had a piece of halibut that was at least 2inches thick and cooked perfectly. For dessert, we shared the Poached Pear served warm with pistachio mascarpone and sangria syrup...oh man...this was GOOD!! I wish I had seveal stomachs. They also had a feature entree that was boubon-braised pork belly on coffee-crusted port tenderloin that I would have loved to try. The service was excellent. That night, there was a pianist who really helped to make dinner an event. This is a MUST GO TO, if you are in Halifax!!!

Where to enjoy NS wines when you dine in Halifax

Where to enjoy NS wines when you dine in Halifax

The Press Gang turns out some of Halifax’s best food from its home across from the Grand Parade in one of the city’s oldest buildings. The appetizers and entrees alike make excellent use of local ingredients, especially lobster and scallops, but it’s the oyster bar that keeps ’em coming back. Belly up to the bar, and order fresh oysters from Nova Scotia and the Maritimes, and wash them down with glasses of Tidal Bay by Gaspereau Vineyards.

Halifax oyster bars: Eat, slurp and be merry

Halifax oyster bars: Eat, slurp and be merry

The selection of oysters at the bar changes every day, making The Press Gang worth a frequent pilgrimage. Located in a centuries-old building opposite the Grand Parade, Press Gang prices its oysters individually so order exactly as many as you wish. Expect the best from all three Maritime provinces, including Nova Scotia's Black Point and Sober Island oysters, New Brunswick's Beausoleils and PEI's Malpeques and Lucky Limes, to appear regularly.

Cheers to Halifax's best whisky bars

Cheers to Halifax's best whisky bars

The Press Gang occupies one of the oldest buildings in Halifax, and it pours some of the oldest whiskies, too. Care for a 1971 Macallan, or perhaps the 1961 Glen Grant? This is where you'll find them, along with less-rarefied drams. In total, the list runs to more than 200 whiskies from around the world. That's a lot to navigate on your own, so make a point of coming in on Tuesdays between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., when the house whisky expert hosts a weekly tasting.
