Decent food, a bit pricey

Salty's location is awesome, the food is pretty good, but a little overpriced for what you get. We ordered seafood dishes, which were fresh and hot and came out of the kitchen relatively quickly. We've dined both upstairs and downstairs. Upstairs is more pricey, but I found the food better.

it was a nice place to dine but I expected more for the price. It was very good service but again the food should have been a litle more upscale! My lobster was good (hard to mess up) but the steak was not as tender as expected. The appetizers were very good, salads are super!

Hard to find a downside to that...

Hard to find a downside to that restaurant. It is not a cheap restaurant ( 70$ for appetizer, main dish and 2 glasses of wine), but the food was delicious. Ambience was very very marine, with view on the harbour, with a big sail ship parked just down my window. Very good service: a good mix of friendly, smiley faces with professionnal training. It was just right. I would recomend making reservations. I went on a friday night, and they had a full house.

Succulent seafood restaurants in Halifax

Succulent seafood restaurants in Halifax

It's hard to beat Salty's for location: Perched out over water, on one of the wooden docks that jut into Halifax Harbour, it has 180-degree views. In the summer, you can sit outside, breathe in the briny air, and watch the ferries go back and forth from Dartmouth. Try the soft, crunchy calamari or the crab cakes, which melt on the tongue. The salmon steak is juicy and perfect with a few drops of lemon. It's not cheap, but you won't care.

Halifax oyster bars: Eat, slurp and be merry

Halifax oyster bars: Eat, slurp and be merry

Salty's takes waterfront dining to the extreme, standing on a pier extending right into the harbour itself. Whether you dine indoors or out, you'll have spectacular views, and the salt sea air to make your oysters all the tastier. Salty's stocks New Brunswick Beausoleils year round, serving them downstairs with horseradish and cocktail sauce or upstairs with balsamic vinaigrette. Order them at half price during the 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Happy Hour.

Go upscale: Fine dining in Halifax

Go upscale: Fine dining in Halifax

The setting here is classic Halifax: right on the boardwalk, overlooking the harbour, with views out towards Dartmouth and McNabs Island. It's all about the seafood: the thick, creamy chowder – how much can they pack in there? – the tart oven-baked salmon and the salty bacon-wrapped scallops. There's patio seating, but go upstairs if you seek a cozier, more intimate vibe with a low, wood-framed ceiling and traditional white-table cloths. Ask the staff what the freshest catch is, and go from there.
