Meet the owner

There's a continuous learning curve you can expect in Mount Pleasant at one of the neighbourhood's most edifying craft breweries — just one of many reasons why it's thriving among all levels of local beer enthusiasts.

Founders of Faculty Brewing Co. Mauricio Lozano and his wife Alicia Medina came to Vancouver from Puebla, Mexico in 2008 to obtain their masters degree at UBC; Mauricio in food science, Alicia in architecture.

"We thought we'd do school and go back, which was the plan," says Mauricio, "but we liked it here a lot and so we stayed and made a life for ourselves."

Alicia was not only behind the brewery's design, but she also designed the space across the street, turning her kombucha hobby into a commercial brewing enterprise, Oddity Kombucha, which you can purchase at Faculty, both on tap and in the bottle.

Faculty, tucked away on Ontario Street, between 2nd and 3rd, opened in August 2016 and is Vancouver’s first open source brewery. Faculty – a name play on one of the owners' experience as a professor – aims to be an open environment where patrons can ask questions about craft beer. They also share their recipes online. The brewery serves up pale ales, stouts, saisons and more.
