Best place on the Drive for coffee and lunch. The sandwiches are amazing and the staff are the best. I’ve come for years with the family and am now introducing the grandchildren. They love the ice cream, sweets and decor. Do yourself a favour and visit during Christmas to see the place fully decorated.

Charming Italian cafés for an espresso in Vancouver

Charming Italian cafés for an espresso in Vancouver

Though its blocks are lined with many different kinds of restaurants now, Commercial Drive used to be known as the heart of Vancouver’s Little Italy. So, when a café has a reputation for being the “oldest Italian coffee house in B.C.” and it’s located on The Drive, you can bet it’s legit. Café Calabria is as famous for its paninis as its coffee, so make sure you stop by for lunch or dinner.

Must-try coffee shops on The Drive

Must-try coffee shops on The Drive

You can’t talk about coffee on the Drive and not include a straight-out-of-Rome, authentically Italian café. Adorned with marble statues and a riff on Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel (God is passing Man an espresso), this is tradition and passion amid a bustling scene. Locals, families, young and old gather around small tables to sip Americanos or lean on the bar to chat about the day ahead while they quickly down double espressos. This is a café at home in Little Italy.

Sample La Dolce Vita at Vancouver’s sweetest gelato joints

Sample La Dolce Vita at Vancouver’s sweetest gelato joints

Everybody’s part of la famiglia at Francesco Murdocco’s coffee shop and bar, aptly named after his Italian birthplace. Francesco first opened his café on Commercial Drive in 1976, making this one of the oldest Italian coffee houses in Vancouver. Café Calabria has a warm, welcoming interior with a kitschy European ambiance complete with imposing columns, Romanesque marble statues and Sistine Chapel style frescos on the ceiling. The handmade gelato tempts visitors from behind the glass in colourful rows of classic varieties like nocciola, tiramisu and stracciatella. The neighbourhood spot also serves made-to-order paninis and focaccia sandwiches.
