Jamaica is known for the diversity of its cuisine, having had many influences from different cultures throughout its history: British, East Indian, Spanish, Portuguese, West African, French and Chinese. So when owner Alvin Reece bought a donair store, and combined it with his Jamaican cooking, the union was unique but flavourful. “When I first decided to open the restaurant, there was no place in Calgary that served Jamaican dishes,” recalls Alvin. “Incorporating Jamaican cuisine with the donair store that I bought was a good decision.”
AAA Donair and Jamaican Cuisine serves original donairs, made with chicken and beef, while the Jamaican influence comes from their jerk chicken donair. Jerk chicken is one of Jamaica’s best known and loved national dishes. “It is indeed our customers’ favourite,” says Alvin. Jamaican patties are also popular with Alvin’s customers, along with the traditional Jamaican ackee fruit, saltfish and bammy (a Jamaican cassava flatbread). But perhaps AAA Donair and Jamaican Cuisine’s secret weapons are their fried dumplings, which Alvin notes, “you can’t find in any other Jamaican restaurants in the area.”
