Why do I itch all over?

August 22, 2014

You probably feel like scratching just reading the title of this article. It’s with good reason, as this subject couldn’t be more irritating! And it becomes even more so when you’re constantly asking yourself the question "why do I itch all over, day after day?"

The uncontrollable urge to scratch

There are countless possible reasons for an uncontrollable urge to scratch. Whatever the cause, it’s best to not scratch, but that’s easier said than done, isn’t it? But scratching only exacerbates the problem and increases your risk of contracting a bacterial infection.

A few possible causes

Itching, called "pruritus" in medical jargon, is most often caused by the following factors.

  • Infections
  • Insect bites or burns
  • Chronic diseases
  • Skin parasites
  • Exposure to the sun
  • Dry skin or eczema

A change in routine?

If red patches appear here and there on your body overnight, try to identify what you might have changed in your routine in the last few days.

  • Did you use a new laundry detergent or body soap?
  • Are you wearing a new item of clothing or jewelry?
  • Did you swim in water that might have irritated your skin?
  • Are you taking a new medication?

The answers to these questions will probably give you the answer. With some small adjustments, the problem should disappear after a few days.

Relief, please!

Pharmacies stock a variety of over-the-counter creams and other lotions that soothe itching with different active ingredients. Using a moisturizer may be a solution if you suspect dry skin is causing the itch. Other solutions include taking lukewarm showers, wearing clothing made of natural fibres rather than synthetics and not cranking up the heating.

Are you itching to see a doctor?

It is advisable to consult a doctor if itching persists, if it worsens or if skin lesions develop. In some cases the itching might not heal by itself, hence the need to see a doctor or dermatologist. Contacting your medical clinic is also recommended if you frequently find yourself wondering why you're so itchy.
