If you're looking to cover up white or grey hair, you don't have to resort to heavy chemicals. Try these hair secrets out at home today and you'll be surprised at how effective they are.

Tips for DIY hair dye

Eyeball those roots

If you're of a certain age, you may colour your hair, and your white roots seem to peek out faster than a race car on a speedway. Here's a quick fix. Apply your mascara to the roots with an old toothbrush, blending it in as you go. This trick works best with dark hair — so what do you do if you're a blonde? Try beige or taupe eye shadow as temporary camouflage.

A sage decision for brunettes

Applied to brown or black hair, sage will darken gray hairs. Here's how.

  1. Put 50 grams (0.25 cup) of dried sage into a bowl and pour 500 millilitres (two cups) of boiling water over it.
  2. Let the mixture steep for three hours or overnight before straining it into a bottle or jar.
  3. Shampoo your hair as usual and rinse.
  4. Next, apply the sage tea to gray hairs one area at a time, dabbing it on with a cotton ball or a wad of cheesecloth.
  5. Air-dry or use a hair dryer, but do not rinse.

You'll probably need to repeat the process once a week until you get the colour you want.

Shelve the dye for darker locks

Leave chemical dyes on the shelf and colour your dark hair with rosemary instead.

  1. Pour 500 millilitres (17 oz) of boiling water over 250 grams (one cup) of fresh chopped rosemary leaves.
  2. Allow the mixture to stand until cold.
  3. Next, bottle it and use to rinse hair with after washing. Goodbye gray!

Your grey roots will be a thing of the past once you've tried one of these home hair dyes — and everyone will think you paid a bundle to have it done!
