The ocean is full of tasty treasures, but they must be prepared with skill to be truly enjoyed. Don't panic! Here's a list of good restaurants offering seafood, oysters and tartare that is fresh, delicious, and wonderfully prepared.
Located on rue Saint-Vallier West, in Saint-Sauveur, this tiny restaurant (or rather a counter!) is dedicated to the raw way of the sea. Oysters are featured, depending on the catch, which is indicated on the board, but which are willing to share the spotlight with tartare, gravlax, and ceviche.
With its view of the port on rue Dalhousie, it easily has one of the top five terraces in town, but the menu of this restaurant, which is part of the Groupe Restos Plaisirs, is not left behind. The catches of fresh fish are monitored, as well as, in season, oysters, which are served Rockefeller style, which never goes out of fashion.
In the Old Port area on rue Sault-au-Matelot: the obvious restaurant for gravlax, ceviche, calamari and fish caught that day! The salmon tartares, as an appetizer, main course or trio, honours the restaurant, and are served in an airy decor that contrasts with the glitz of the nearby tourist traps.
The crowd jostles at this rue du Parvis restaurant for Le Versa's "4 à huîtres" (oysters served from 4 pm to 8 pm, with a fun play on words of the word "huître" ("oyster") and "huit" ("eight)), in the Saint-Roch neighbourhood. At $1.50 per oyster, you can savour them, at this good price, during the "r" months, or, in French, months ending in "bre", related to the best times to eat oysters. If by chance you are extending your aperitifs into dinner, you can indulge in other seafood and fresh fish selections, à la carte.
