St-Henri is one of Montreal’s most up-and-coming areas. The neighbourhood, which once housed the city’s working class, is now filled with condos, industrial lofts and, of course, a slew of trendy local eateries. We’ve rounded up the hippest haunts to grab a bite in this booming part of town.
Tuck Shop is definitely one of Montreal’s best-hidden gems. It’s a casual atmosphere, but the menu and wine list, as well as the prices, keep this place quite upscale. Tuck Shop offers a chalkboard menu, which they also post on Twitter the day of, featuring tasty food filled with fresh ingredients. You’re guaranteed to have a good meal here. Reservations are a must.
The high-end bistro Evoo (Extra Virgin Olive Oil) has been on Notre-Dame St. West for only three years and is already a neighbourhood staple. Here, you can enjoy meals prepared with fresh and local products. At brunch time, be sure to try their “full Irish” breakfast (made with Gaspos sausage, fried egg, back bacon, black pudding and milk-fed piglet liver) and their Nutell00, which is their own take on the hazelnut chocolate spread we know so well.
The smell of Middle Eastern spices fills the air at the appropriately named Sumac on Notre-Dame. From the salads to the hummus to the shawarma, everything at Sumac is prepared fresh. The restaurant is clean, casual and inviting, a great spot to treat yourself to something special, without breaking the bank. Feeling lazy? You can also order for takeout.
Fresh on the scene is Chō, an Asian fusion tapas restaurant. This restaurant is welcome in the St-Henri dining scene, as it’s the only Asian style restaurant in the neighbourhood. They even serve their twist on a Quebec classic — the poutine. Their rendition includes fries topped with kimchi, cheddar, scallions and braised beef.
Grumman 78 is the headquarters for the popular food truck of the same name. They led the food truck movement back to Montreal. The restaurant itself is located in a large garage space on De Courcelle that housed the city’s cavalry. They serve delicious street tacos with a gourmet twist, much like in their truck. They also have a rotating menu with daily specials, perfect for a casual dinner with friends.
