It’s hard to believe that this tasting event held in Old Montreal is already celebrating its 10th anniversary – a decade of deliciousness that is clearly a testament to its popularity! Held from January 5 to February 5, 2017, Happening Gourmand offers excellent tables d’hôte menus ranging in price from $23 to $30. This year, nine restaurants are participating, so you have plenty to choose from. [image credit: iStock]
For $23, plus alcohol, you have a choice of several appetizers including the risotto patty served with meat stew and tomatoes served with mozzarella di bufala and basil. For the main course you can choose from 10 pizzas including the prosciutto and mushroom or the Capriciosa served with sausage and boiled eggs. Eight pasta choices are available, from penne with rosée sauce to gluten-free corn pasta with seasonal vegetables. A tiramisu or a mini Nutella pizza make for the perfect end to your meal.
For $23, the Vieux-Port Steakhouse offers a few appetizers including gratin snails and homemade crab cake. For the main course, the choice is between beef shoulder, grilled salmon fillet, chicken breast, beef striploin or prime rib. For dessert, prepare yourself in advance to choose between the classic vanilla crème brulée and the chocolate mousse cake.
For appetizers, you can choose between the beetroot carpaccio and the butternut squash soup. For the main course, you have three options: chicken breast, fried monkfish with its tomatoes and bacon emulsion, or wild mushroom risotto. Top it all off in style with a lemon-raspberry sablé or praline cake – all for $26.
This Place d'Armes restaurant offers a set menu for $26. Starters: opt for the miso soup or seaweed and lettuce salad. You have the choice between three main dishes, either the yaki chicken with Mirin sauce, salmon marinated with red miso, or udon noodles fried with tofu and zucchini. A bread pudding with beans completes it all.
For $26, you can choose between three starters and three main courses. For appetizers, you decide between the snail and scallop puff pastry, salted cod fritters or vegetable terrine. For your main meal, choose between grilled swordfish pavé, braised duck legs with olives, and the burger dog with sauerkraut sausage and American mustard-mayo-tomato sauce. Cap the meal off with a pear strudel or St-Paul chocolate bark.
Between two good cocktails, you have to eat! Here’s what Gaspar has prepared for you for just $26. As a starter, the onion soup or beet carpaccio are sure to please. For the main course, choose between the mac and cheese, the cheeseburger (smoked cheese) from the tavern, or “marinières” mussels and fries. For dessert, go for S’mores or caramel pie.
This jazz bistro-bar awaits you with its beet and Grenoble walnut salad appetizer or its duck rillettes served with dried cranberries. For the main course, you’ll have a difficult time deciding between mushroom risotto with duck confit, nicoise salad, and marinated angus flank steak. A small chocolate cake or tiramisu completes this meal at $26.
Montreal chef Derek Bocking’s menu, as seen on Top Chef, offers a choice of starters consisting of a roasted onion soup or a kale salad with oak leaf for $30. For the main course, choose between veal short ribs, the Arctic char or quinoa salad and grilled peaches. Add a dessert of the day to top it all off.
Three starters, three main courses and two desserts: you get to choose one of each to take part in their $30 promotion. To start: braised guinea fowl puff pastry, chestnut soup with crispy brioche, or smoked and roasted eel. For the main dish: braised veal flank with truffled potatoes, herb-crusted mahi-mahi, or risotto with duck confit and fried eggplant. For dessert: an apricot tart or orange soufflé. Tough choices, right?
