Whether you’re fuelling a weekend of window-shopping at Yonge and Dundas or grabbing a quick bite to eat during your lunch break, finding a decent lunch spot downtown can be a little bit challenging. Toronto diners have voted these sandwich boys the undisputed kings of Vietnamese subs. The lunchtime line-ups on weekdays usually stretch out the door and the tiny sit-down area inside is filled hungry students and office types. Subs are stuffed with your choice of grilled chicken, lemongrass tofu, beef cheek, squid, duck confit and more. The five-spice pork belly banh mi is a favourite.
Toronto's original sandwich chain, now with 12 stores and counting — but still family owned and operated — recently opened an outpost on Yonge Street just south of College. The resident butcher cuts the meat onsite, and all of the sauces and condiments are made in house. The menu features an array of meaty Italian sandwiches, such as steak, chicken, meatball and sausage. The bestselling veal sandwich is a saucy delight, served on a fresh baked Kaiser. Here’s a tip: If you're not ravenous, order a mini version for a lighter bite at a good price.
Admittedly, this hidden gem is a short walk off from Yonge Street, just past Bay Street, but the trip is definitely worth it. This casual Middle Eastern spot turns out a mean shawarma wrap and a variety of other sandwich specials, including plenty of vegetarian delights. The family-run shop has limited seating so plan on taking your wrap to go.
It’s become a mainstay for post-shopping snacks and cocktails, with a chic, two-storey interior that’s well-equipped to host the Yonge and Dundas crowds. But Joey’s is just as good for a quick sit-down for lunch if you need a break from the Eaton Centre’s hustle and bustle. A largely Japanese-Canadian lunch menu takes updated sandwich classics to the next level – an Ahi tuna sandwich mingles with a lobster grilled cheese, Baja fish tacos, and hand-formed burgers.
At the foot of the Eaton Centre, The Duke of Richmond is much akin to your favourite neighbourhood pub, only bigger. A proud family member of the Duke Pubs chain, The Duke of Richmond is sibling to the Duke of York in the Annex and the Duke of Devon in the TD tower. Perched smack in the downtown core, it’s a tired shopper’s sanctuary for a pint and some pub-food classics, including a British-Canadian-style battered fish sandwich aptly titled Peggy’s Cove, a mouthwatering BBQ chicken sandwich, and a dedicated Taco Corner featuring Baja fish and pulled pork.
