Eating out doesn’t always have to put a massive dent in your bank account. Skip the fast food and fill your belly with authentic food that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. These Edmonton spots prove you can eat well on a budget.
f you like bread and cheese (really, who doesn’t?), go for a simple but delish pita at Sunbake Pita Bakery. This take-out lunch option will only cost you about $5 and will fill you up to the brim. The zatar comes with cheese or veggies but the spicy chicken and vegetable pie has both, making it the clear winner. The sausage and cheese pie is also a popular pick but really, you can’t go wrong with any of these super-inexpensive Lebanese lunches.
All of their famous sandwiches are only $8, which is a killer deal, especially if you consider that the ciabatta buns are made fresh and there is a ton of quality protein on each sandwich. The sides are also reasonably priced – only $2 for potato crisps or $3.50 for fresh cut fries with their house made ketchup. A decent sized container of soup will run you $4.50. But, if you get a sandwich and one side, you’ll be plenty satisfied.
Their whole menu is fairly priced and tasty. I’m partial to the pad Thai, which has three different sources of protein – egg, shrimp and chicken – rice noodles and veggies. It’s a complete, balanced meal for about $10 – and, there’s usually some left over for a snack or small meal later. Add some soup or spring rolls if you crave variety and you’ll definitely have enough for seconds.
These quality calzones may be cheap, but they don’t resemble fast food in any way, shape or form. The light, fluffy dough comes with around four different filling options. But they’re made to order, so you can add or subtract ingredients as you like. Get there early to get the kind you want or stock up on the frozen ones to bake at home. Best of all, they are under $10, so the only thing you’re splurging on is calories.
Their huge portions of delicious pasta are reasonably priced from the start but if you go on a Monday or Tuesday, every pasta dish is half-off. That means a heaping dish of pasta for about $7. And, unless you are crazy hungry, eating for two, or a giant, you will have enough left over for the next day. Two meals for under $10? How can you possibly top that? Gluten-free pasta will run you a little extra but you can still get the half-off deal.
