If you’ve ever worried about shampoo chemicals or wondered what happens to your highlighter foils, you’ve likely realized that hair maintenance is tough on the environment. Many salons are dedicated to environmentally friendly, sustainable practices, such as recycling and using ammonia-free hair dyes. These hair studios make being eco-friendly chic and easy.
Dandy Salon Spa
11104 82 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T6G 2L8This spacious, well-lit salon is a part of Green Circle, which aims to make the Canadian hair industry sustainable by 2020. The salon uses a variety of eco-friendly hair products, including Aveda and Kevin Murphy – brands that are both known for their commitment to green practices and recycling. Located close to the University of Alberta campus, this is a great spot for students who wish to be eco-conscious to get their hair done – they even offer a student discount on Wednesdays.
Sylvia & Co
46E Athabascan Ave, Sherwood Park, AB T8A 4E3This Aveda salon, located in Sherwood Park, recycles materials and products in accordance with the rules of being an Aveda salon. And, of course, they use Aveda products, which are made almost entirely from naturally derived pure plant and flower extracts. The salon offers men’s and women’s haircuts and colour jobs in their clean, environmentally friendly studio. And, they focus solely on hair, so you’ll have their full attention every time you come in for a cut, colour or style job.
Echo Hair Design Inc
205-8135 102 St NW, Edmonton, AB T6E 4A4Located in the Roots on Whyte building, Echo Hair Design was built to be natural from the start – the building only houses green, organic businesses with no toxins. The salon uses Intelligent Nutrients hair products and Organic Colour dyes, which use coconut oil instead of ammonia to open to the hair shaft, allowing colour to soak in. Plus, the prices are comparable to other salons. And, the studio even has a “breathing wall,” made from American clay. It naturally absorbs odours and releases moisture, cutting down on any unnatural smells from hair products.
The Beauty Parlor
201-10011 82 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T6E 1Z2Not only are the products here eco-chic, but the salon itself is also made from sustainable products, including the floors, which are made from repurposed wood from old Alberta grain elevators. The chairs where you sit to have your hair blow-dried are vintage, and the chandeliers are from a thrift store. While the salon isn’t 100 per cent organic, they do offer paraben-free products, such as Kevin Murphy, and ammonia-free colour lines, such as Koko.
Melange Salon & Spa
102-1207 91 St SW, Edmonton, AB T6X 1E9Located on the main floor of an iconic yellow mansion in Summerside, Melange uses organic, natural and non-toxic hair products. They carry products from Kevin Murphy, Intelligent Nutrients and Curelle. The salon even has a 100 per cent chemical-free head lice treatment from the brand Ladibugs. And, for those concerned about chemicals in hair dye, the salon uses Essensity, an ammonia and fragrance free hair colour made with more than 90 per cent naturally derived, organic ingredients.

10808 124 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5M 0H3A trendy, colourful salon that carries eco-friendly hair products? Sold. Propaganda stocks Aveda shampoos, conditioners and styling products, which are known for their 100 per cent post-consumer recycled packaging and certified wind-powered production. Aveda’s naturally derived formulas are gentle on hair but still get the job done. And, Propaganda regularly holds fundraisers for environmental causes, such as WaterAid Canada.

They offer eco-friendly hair products and colour, including lines from Kevin Murphy and Davines. The former produces shampoos, conditioners and styling products that are 100 per cent paraben, sulphate and cruelty free, while the latter makes a hair colouring system that is free of preservatives and petrochemicals.
Adara Hair & Body Studio
9116 82 Ave, Edmonton, AB T6C 0Z5This salon is a member of the Green Circle program, a company that recycles what would otherwise be thrown away by salons, and promotes hair studios that meet certain environmental and sustainable standards. Adara Hair recycles the majority of its waste, including excess packaging, hair treatment chemicals, tin foil and hair clippings. They also offer a refill bar, where customers can bring in their own reusable bottles and fill up on shampoo, conditioner and hairstyling products. Plus, all of the products they carry are approved by PETA.
