Indescribably good Indian restaurants in Edmonton

Filling up on creamy, rich Indian dishes (shout out, butter chicken!) will almost definitely result in a food coma but it`s always worth it. If you've never met a naan bread you didn't love, try these superior Indian establishments in Edmonton.

Maria Northern Mexican Cuisine

1
10220 103 St Nw, Edmonton, AB T5J 0Y8

This restaurant is all about decadence. The food is rich and creamy, with so many great choices on the menu. The butter chicken and rainbow korma are two of their specialty dishes, but they also have a huge list of tandoori dishes, cooked in a clay oven. Add some naan or roti bread (or pooda bread, made with chickpea flour, if you’re avoiding gluten) to yummy entrees such as tandoori salmon, chicken tikka or beef vindaloo.

Nosh Cafe

2
102-10235 124 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5N 1P9

A trendy, easily accessible lunch spot, Nosh Café serves up a bevy of Indian dishes with North American touches. The chef’s creativity is put to the test with dishes such as alfredo penne with chicken tikka and a samosa burger. Their butter chicken is thought by some to be the best in the city. They also have a variety of wraps, including gluten-free options. Don’t leave without trying their home-made Chai.

Zaika Indian Bistro Bar

This cute little bistro is tucked away on the south side of Edmonton, so it remains something of a secret. The mango chicken curry is mouth-watering, with thick hunks of chicken bathed in a slightly sweet, creamy mango sauce. Pair it with fluffy coconut rice – a perfect complement, especially because the slivers of onion in the rice prevent sweetness overload. Bonus: They have gluten-free roti, a hard-to-find Indian treat. It`s like a vegetable crepe, and it makes the perfect scoop for extra sauce.

Remedy Cafe

3
10279 Jasper Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T5J 1X8

This popular downtown Jasper Avenue café is always bursting with people at lunch but wraps and rice dishes still manage to come out rather quickly. The chana masala wrap is a huge portion (2 full wraps!) of chickpeas in a thick, warm masala sauce, and a dark, sweet dip. Most menu items can be made gluten-free or vegan but there are a few meatier options, like the tandoori chicken wrap. Whatever you order, wash it down with the best Chai latte in town.

Guru Fine Indian Cuisine

4
17021 100 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T5S 1T9

This is one of the most popular Indian restaurants in the city, with numerous awards under its belt. And they take both their food and their vino seriously, with a wine list curated by Edmonton wine expert and owner of Vinomania, Gurvinder Bhatia. The cuisine sees influences of Asian dishes, and is often playful – the decadent butter chicken samosa being one example.

Khazana Restaurant

5
10177 107 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5J 1J5

A fabulous lunch buffet awaits you at Khazana. The butter chicken is creamy, delectable and rich, perfect scooped over a bed of rice pilaf. The fresh naan bread is dropped off at the table practically before you can take your first mouthful of tandoori chicken. The fireplace adds warmth to the rooms, while the curries add warmth to your belly. While there is a menu, the restaurant is often so crowded that you`re better off going for the buffet – full bellies, no waiting.

Narayanni's Restaurant

6
10131 81 Avenue NW, Edmonton, AB T6E 1W9

This buffet-only restaurant serves up South African-style Indian cuisine. That means their curries and sauces tend to be clear, not cream-based, resulting in lighter dishes that won`t leave a buttery pit in your stomach. Their buffet features a lot of vegetarian and gluten-free dishes (they even have a monthly vegan night where the entire buffet is filled with vegan dishes). The crispy, light papadums with mint chutney are crazy addictive but leave room for their chicken biryani.

Buon appetito!
