Ugh. It’s the middle of the month and you’re already behind in paying the bills. Money’s tight and so eating out is not in the cards. Or so you thought. These five lifesavers dish out fantastic fare at such a reasonable price, you can stop worrying about your finances and enjoy a great meal. Who says inexpensive food has to be boring?
At Me Va Me Kitchen Express, everything is made fresh and comes out super fast. Food is healthy and served in big portions, so bonus - you might just have enough left over for dinner too. Many of their menu items are under $10. One must have item - their Hummus Topped with either Chicken ($8.95) or Mushrooms ($7.45). Should you be trying to have salads for lunch, top your Greek Salad ($6.95) with 4 Falafel Balls ($2.25) or a House Salad ($5.95) with two Chicken Breast Skewers ($3.45).
This sweet little spot in Little Korea is filled with homemade Columbian food as well as grocery items. Delectable handmade fare by owners Maria and Alan include Tamales ($7), Arepas ($6-$7), Empanadas ($2) and a variety of sweets. The empanadas are so good, there’s no way you’re getting just one. And with all that money left over, you can indulge in homemade desserts and pick up a few groceries to take home.
The hot dogs at Fancy Franks are so juicy, you’ll forgo burgers for the next while. Especially at these prices. The Basic Dog is under five bucks, with Mild and Spicy Sausages only $5.25 and Turkey Sausage at $5.50. That leaves enough for a Salad ($4.25), Fries ($3.50) or Dessert (Mini Donuts $2.50-$3.25 for 6; Ice Cream $2.49 for 1 scoop). And the best part? You get to choose from what seems like a gazillion toppings, so you can change it up every time.
The Souvlaki Pitas at Messinis are epic. In addition to Pork or Chicken ($4.87) or Vegetarian ($3.50) packed into the pita, you also get a handful of fries tucked right into the sandwich. Not only does that make it insanely delicious, it’s also unbelievably filling. And messy. But so good, you won’t mind a bit (Just remember to grab a bunch of napkins before heading out). That’s why there are lineups until early morning. Not only are these pitas affordable, as soon as you finish one, you'll be plotting out a time you can stop for the next one.
