“People’s tastes have deepened, they go beyond the flat white sheet,” says founder David Carruthers, talking about the status of paper in the 21st century. David’s artisanal paper mill, situated right on the Lachine Canal in Pointe-Saint-Charles, has been a journey into a niche domain he never expected to become so big. Papeterie St-Armand manufactures handmade and premium paper products for artists, individuals and companies wanting to create a memorable impression. Some of the paper is made in small batches with the help of vintage equipment.
St-Armand also has embossed paper that is wonderful for using as wallpaper for a very original effect. The factory is in a sense David’s studio, there are always unique one-off sheets hanging to dry. High-end custom packaging solutions have become a St-Armand specialty. “With so much online ordering, there is a great demand for packaging.” David knows a lot about the history of paper, especially 19th and 20th century paper making technologies.
In business for over 35 years, Papeterie Saint-Armand specializes in invitations, books and paper stock for gift shops and art stores. The handmade paper is available in 32 different colours, and if you so choose, can be decorated with stars, leaves or flowers. As another Montreal original, Papeterie Saint-Armand is especially popular among artists, thanks to the range of paper designed for ink, acrylic or watercolour arts.
