Meet the owner

When The Piston’s smoke master Frank Guidoccio began serving up his Austin-style barbecue to the bar’s hungry patrons in June 2010, owner Tarik Zaky had yet to even think of hiring him. At the time, Frank’s rock band, The Order of Good Cheer, was playing its first show at the Bloorcourt Village watering hole.

As per the group’s tradition, he lugged more than his bass guitar along. “He used to bring in his own smoked meat for his shows and give away pulled-pork sandwiches,” recalls Tarik. About five years and 20 gigs later, Tarik approached Frank when reworking The Piston’s menu. Formerly focusing on gourmet sandwiches, with Frank’s help, the bar launched its smokehouse menu in October 2014.

I like it....

excellent music @ this place....very chilled out vibe, mix of soul/blues/oldies/ playing, you can dance to it or just hang out and enjoy. drinks are pretty cheap, bartender was on the ball, and i love the design of the place. you can totally just hang out with friends at the front of the bar in the pews, or get your dance on in the backroom where the DJ's are spinning later in the evening...definitely an awesome new choice for toronto!

Toronto’s best vinyl nights

Toronto’s best vinyl nights

Those with a little dancing in mind flock to this Bloorcourt bar’s now-famed Shindig event. The monthly dance party is several elements of awesome: one part sultry vibe (the low-lit spot is a kind of hipster-meets-rockabilly-meets-mainstream bar); one part sweet tunes via funk, soul and R&B tunes from the ’50s and ’60s; and one part a solemn all-vinyl oath, guaranteeing some rarely heard gems from their original-pressed 7” 45s.

Toronto's best live music bars

Toronto's best live music bars

There’s a rustic, red-hued charm to this Bloorcourt spot, complete with a garage-door entrance, a parlour-style bar in the front, and a dance floor and stage behind a black curtain in the back (dare you to describe a sexier space). Back in 2012, I stopped in looking to have a quick Thursday evening pint, and serendipitously caught the now famed Toronto band DIANA playing a set off their debut album. Perhaps best known for their SHINDIG dance party, the Piston focuses on quality over quantity in their programming, hosting finely curated live music several nights a week.
