“Joe’s Shoe Repair” appears in washed-out white lettering above the Dundas West storefront. But when you walk through the doors, don’t expect to see Joe; he’s returned to his native Italy. And don’t expect to see his successor Tony, a cobbler who locals had grown to love. But don’t worry, the latest owner and the third generation of shoemakers to occupy the space is following tradition in all ways but one — she’s a woman.
Lorena Agolli is the owner and head cobbler of Sole Survivor. The shoe repair shop is a rare commodity in a neighbourhood filled with businesses that have a carefully constructed vintage feel. Wooden shoe forms and tools sit in the front window, while behind the counter, machines that have born witness to decades of worn heels and broken soles are still fully operational. “I was always intrigued by this place,” says Lorena. “What I love about the space is that it has a historic feeling to it.”
