Originally from Australia, Jan had a diverse background as a principal, lecturer, classroom teacher, private tutor and curriculum consultant. She taught in public and independent schools at all grade levels as well as managed and taught children from many backgrounds in Australia, the United Kingdom and Canada.After serving as the first Executive Director of the Children's Own Museum in Toronto, and then the head of public programming and education at the Royal Ontario Museum, she founded her own school – the Howlett Academy – to provide a back-to-basics, common sense approach to education for her own children.
