The Downtown branch opened in 2000. It was started up by Kale Powell, a consistent and fanatical shop rat from the Beaches Cycle Solutions. Kale was a MTB guide at Blue Mountain at the time, teaching hacks and ninjas alike to get up and down the hill in a nice, controlled and survivable manner. But his real job was bugging the crap out of the Beaches store, and buying everything he could reach. It was a tough start, as any business can be, but things went well. Kale is still there, surrounded by a skilled but slightly off group of sales guys and top mechanics. The downtown store offers a full range of bikes for all disciplines, and all the parts and accessories you could ask for. And of course, the service shop offers the top quality repair and tuneup services that Cycle Solutions is known for. I've been a bike messenger for 17 years and this was a first. I got a flat tire and stopped in to SC to purchase a tube. I didn't have a my tool kit on me so asked to use their 15mm and a tire iron to swap the tubes. They said no. So they were willing to sell me the tube, but not let me use the tools for 2 minutes inside the shop. Apparently they dont "lend out" their tools. These guys are the best -- friendly, knowledgeable, thorough, professional, very reasonably priced, and completely free of that hyper-cool bike culture attitude that you find in so many bike shops, where, if you aren't a courier and able to discuss the relative merits of $1000 derailleurs, you get attitude for days. It's less convenient for me than shops closer to home, but I wouldn't go anywhere else.
