Nygel Dorey was motivated to open Groom For Men after seeing an old photograph of his grandfather posing behind a row of men donning facial masks in a barbershop. Nygel's father impressed upon the third-generation barber the importance of grooming, clean cuticles, pressed shirts, shined shoes and a great coif at a young age. "I had a passion for barbering since my youth. Both my dad and grandfather were barbers. But it was more a hobby than a career," Nygel waxes nostalgic. With scissors and straight razor in hand since the age of 13, Nygel's first customer was his father, who told him the only way to learn was by doing. "I cut myself but it went well," Nygel laughs.
At 18, he honed his craft with a degree at Marvel before working as an apprentice and earning his shears as a licensed stylist. Open since 2007, the full-service barbershop moved to its current location in May of 2011, where Nygel and his team offer modern and contemporary hair cuts, shaves, waxing and facials with an emphasis on grooming for the confident man — though women are always welcome.
