Like many bike shop owners, Danu Huber, the proprietor of, and head mechanic at, The World Cycles, has spent most of his adult life in the bicycle industry. He's worked at a number of shops and owned a few; he even started his own bike company, HUKK Bikes, which built burly, free-ride mountain bikes right here in Vancouver.
And like most lifers, Danu's not in it for the money. There's a saying that to make a million dollars in the bike industry, you have to start out with two million. The way Danu sees it, “Most people start out working in bikes shops for the love,” but when confronted with the industry's less-than-rosy financial prospects, that love can turn to bitterness.
