Take a Kennebec potato, cut it into fries, fry them in canola oil, then cook them again until crisp and golden. Toss the fries with sea salt in a specially selected fry tosser and serve either dressed in gravy and squeaky cheese curds or with delectably flavoured mayo or ketchup, and you might just have a dish as delicious as what co-owner and chef Dan Close serves at Spud Shack Fry Co.
Spud Shack is literally steps from the New Westminster SkyTrain Station platform. Although it is an excellent place to pick up a cone of frites for takeout — “French fries” is a historical misnomer for the Belgian-invented dish, Dan explained — the cozy atmosphere and selection of craft beers might entice you to dine in.
The Spud Shack offers cool twists on all your favourite potato pub foods, including dishes like buffalo chicken, ranch and green onion poutine. Their beer is crafted locally and available by the pint or jug. Gluten-free food and drink options are also available, so everyone will be able to enjoy a dinner and drink they love.
A literal train-ride away in New West (the restaurant is in the bottom of the SkyTrain station), Spud Shack’s poutine started as a challenge. Their limited edition ‘porktine’ with bacon-apple-rosemary fritters took first place in Vancouver Foodster’s 2013 Poutine Challenge and was so in demand that they added a revised version to their permanent menu. After its traditional poutine, it’s the most popular item. Get thee to New West, poutine-lovers.
This New Westminster delight doesn’t just make great fries — you’ll also find amazing vegetarian burgers and vegan poutines on the menu. The burger comes with spicy chipotle mayo, feta and arugula, while the poutine has been known to impress carnivores and hardcore vegans alike. What’s more, all entrees come with a hearty serving of freshly cut fries, and gluten-free options abound.
