Meet the owner

Verdun residents can now find a second living room within the warm, inviting walls of neighbourhood café Station W. The café's atmosphere is based on a “third place” ethos – the place to go when not at home or work (although it has been adopted as many a freelancer’s workplace).

“We wanted to create a place that people could really own,” explains owner Simon Defoy. “Our coffee is excellent and the food is delicious while being affordable. Our customers come back almost daily and that is the whole idea behind Station W: one must feel at home.”

This cafe, which prides itself on serving local and homemade products, will delight you with its grilled cheese sandwich made with French toast, sharp cheddar cheese and bacon. It has what it takes to give you enough strength to cut down a tree with your hands after you eat it, but do not do it ($2 and $4).

By definition, a station is “a place where we stop on our way for a short or medium stop, where we take a break.” And W is for Wellington. So Station W is a small cafe on rue Wellington where you can stop for a snack (we love the grilled-cheese) and drink a cup of coffee to continue the day on the right foot. Everything is local and fresh, and breakfast is served every morning from 7 am.

Station, because people stop by Station W, and W for Wellington. And why do people stop by? For the casual atmosphere, for soup, coffee or a grilled cheese sandwich that is served in eight different ways, from feta and spinach to Provolone and prosciutto, and goat cheese and apricot. Many breakfast options are also available, as well as an abundance of joie de vivre. On the menu for the Panache event: a grilled cheese sandwich (fittingly) made with French toast, maple bacon and cheddar cheese. For dessert, try the chocolate and maple bread pudding.
