Having been to King Tin before and been generally happy, and wanting something that would suit everyone, took my wife and grandson there for lunch buffet today. It was never the cat's meow by any means, but acceptable. Well.... The selection was not particularly exciting. Most of the dishes had some version of the same gloppy sauce on them, and the hot and sour soup seemed to be on the same base. Food was mostly oversteamed. Various dishes ran out, and new things brought out in an apparently random fashion, so there was no consistent selection--chicken wings in batter came out for the first time just as we had finished and were heading out the door.... What we did have didn't taste particularly good. I should perhaps add that when they replenished the dishes, it was done in such a sloppy fashion that one had the impression of someone emptying the trash... The atmosphere is nothing to write home about, either. Needs a serious facelift. I'd like to think we just happened to hit a bad time, but I'm not about to try it again to find out.
This has been our fav for chinese for the past 25 years or so. No more. The last few visits have not been good.At the dim sum the pepper steak was bad. Three times now the wait for dinner has been outrageous. We could even hear others commenting last Tuesday and the restaurant was not especially busy. We actually had finished, given up and were packing up the leftovers when the last dish was rushed out to our table. Eggplant with garlic and chilli, not a difficult dish. Thisscenario was being repeated at other tables as well. Our deep fried spicy squid was disgusting - Over cooked and like chewing rubber tires. I guess its eiother underdone mush or overcooked... The sweet and sour pork was SOUR - like sucking lemons. Our last dish took 70 mins to get to our table, long after the rice was pretty much cold. There is never an apology for this kind of thing either - We are finished with the King Tin. 3 strikes you're out.
Things have settled down again after James' marriage. We took friends out for dinner last Saturday night and we were very pleased. The food was excellent, the service impeccable and friendly, everone had a great time. Glad to see this great eating place is still on track.
For many years now, we've ordered their hot and sour soup and we've almost never been disappointed! It's perfect, especially on a cold winter day :) My personal favourite is probably the pineapple chicken which is served in an unique style! It's sweet, but not too sweet yet it is still so flavourful. Yum, yum, yum! We often do takeout but the times that we have dined in, I felt this restaurant is a great example of a family restaurant. Nothing to complain about and I definitely recommend a visit :)
This has been a favorite eating place of ours for the past 25 or more years. Lately they've gotten so sloppy, well, we've been disappointed too many times. Poorly cooked food, couldn't care less service from poorly trained wait staff, Warm water, sticky chopsticks, - Friday night they had a party in there. Still, if you're open for business, at least try to cook the food decently. The deep fried crispy squid was anything but crispy. It was an undercooked, pale, anemic, soggy, mushy mess. I complained to James (son of the owner) who just shrugged it off with a laugh. The Yang Chow rice lacked seasoning hence it was pretty tasteless. The General Chicken on rice was skimpy and not properly cooked. It should be slightly crispy and not soft and drowned in sauce... We've many times had to return a Dim Sum dish on other occassions... sometimes they credit you, sometimes not. The meal we had Friday night was almost $50. and it was disgusting. I guess things change. They have a new cook helping out - wish they would train him properly! If you look you will see my previous reiews give this place high scores. Things change.
As a chinese... BBQ Pork bum is my fav. Well..today, i went to king tin (first time there). i didn't know they don't have buffet on holiday but anyways... so i decided to try there dim sum... I know u take the food and go around every table and then what's left on the cart goes back on the steamer again... but seriously, the bottom part of the bbq pork bum was mushy... the bum looks yellow and tasted like the steamer too... that's just too much re-steaming!!!!~~~ second... hello waitress!!~~ can't u see the tea pot cap was tipped open?? that means add more water plz~~ third... shrimp dumplings... when i picked it up... the skin falls off~~ too much re-steaming~~
We've been eating at the King Tin for more than 20 years. The hot and sour soup is the best anywhere. The weekend dim sum lunches are not to be missed! Reasonable and delicious dishes are offered. Their yang chow rice is the best in town, along with several of their noodle dishes. Seafood is a specialty here - and fabulous. The several casseroles they offer are incredibly good, wonderful sauces and melt in the mouth meat. The style is definitely chinese and not Canadian style chinese food. You will find a large percentage of oriental diners here as it is mostly wonderfully authentic chinese food cooked as it should be. The General Chicken is to die for. The lunch buffet has improved so much since the last review I just read - it isn't the same at all. Dim sums, shrimp dumplings, shu mai, deep fried chicken wings, spring rolls, soup, so much more than I can list here, and a good variety of rice, noodle and sweet and sour dishes. Eggplant with black bean sauce, curried squid... This is a must try if you haven't yet. One of the best lunch values anywhere at $7.00 per person!
This is the favourite spot for lunch for me and many of my friends. You see many of the regulars over and over. The food is delicious, especially the hot and sour soup and the beef in black bean sauce. Dim sum is yummy and the squid is a special treat. Sometimes the kitchen is slow filling the buffet, but it has been better lately. The server is very busy, but is so pleasant and tries to improve her English. We often bus our own table, but that is part of the experience. The owner is always gracious. One improvement would be the cleaning of the carpet more often. Great food for a great price at the lunch buffet!
OK, the place is a dump but the food is great! I go there regurlarly and love to take friends. I'd eat there every day if I could. I have to agree however that they do use alot of MSG and salt.
I love this place. I would say I go once every couple of months or so. Sometimes more, sometimes less. Once in a while the buffet has it's off day where the food is only adequate, but for the most part it's quite delicious. They have the best spring rolls in town and a variety of interesting and tasty items in the buffet. I've read a couple of reviews here stating that their hot and sour soup is the best, but I would have to disagree. It's good, but compared to other chinese restaurants in Kitchener, it's a middle to low rank. Thumbs up from this happy customer!
Fluffy and flavourful fried rice! However, I can taste the oil they used for other dishes. Portions were generous, good value for $! However, they need waitresses that speak fluent english there, and the place needs renovation. I come here for the food, so I will come back in the future.
I ordered take out from this restaurant and the food was hot, flavourful, and delicious. The payment process was efficient too. Free chili sauce!!!! However, the price for the tofu casserole is trivial at $8, because it had no meat in it.
Amazing! The food was delicious! I loved it, the hot and sour soup is really amazing! If you want some real, authentic chinese food this place is a must! I wouldn't know about the service...I had the buffet
Our friends visited this place during the lunch time, they iked it, so we decided to go there for dinner.Very dissapointed. The service was slow. The waitresses are different, one of them came and asked if we were ok. I have said that I had no idea what to order, and she just said"it's okay " and walked away. Boy, I wanted to ask for some recomensations!! Well, we made our choice. I wish they would warn us about the size of portions. One small bowl of soup may feed up to 4 people. We ordered two soups. My husband couldn't eat wonton (even though he likes it), he said the meat inside the dumplings looked undercooked. My soup was okay. Noodles with beef were okay too, beef was quite tasteless. Pork with veggies: I thought they forgot to add the pork there. They brought a ton of cabbage in sause, with some carrots.... I found literally just 5 pieces of pork in this huge plate with cabbage. I doubt I would go there again....
I had the lunch buffet and it was fabulous! The Hot and Sour Soup was the best i've ever had! I also adore the sweet and sour pork! Delicious!
The food is excellent. They bring it out as it's made, hot and fresh. The squid is amazing. The hot & sour soup is the best I've ever had, barr none! The service is average at any time. Several servers speak little english, but in the end - the food makes the trip from Guelph well worth the while each time we go!
I used to adore this restaurant, mainly because it actually offers authentic Chinese food as opposed to all the chicken ball stuff out there. Unfortunately, their service and food have gone downhill. In recent times, you can really taste how unfresh the food and oil were, especially the seafood. The service was also horrible. Firstly, they forgot our order and we had to ask for it 5 times. When it arrived, it was almost 45 minutes later. The waitress ignored the entire time and complained directly to us that we didn't give enough tip even though her service was worse than horrible. When we said this she told us never to come back, which is exactly what I'm doing!
I have always enjoyed every visit. If there is anything really worth complaining about, it would be that the washrooms are deplorable. The only other thing, which has become a source of amusement rather than an annoyance, is that the soup and appitizers might come at any time, not necessarily before the entrees. The owners and staff are always friendly. Contrary to an earlier review on this site, I have always found the Dim Sum to be excellent, as compared to the many I have tried in Toronto and elsewhere. Overall, I love this place. I have been enjoying their food and hospitality for over 14 years now (both in their present location and in their former location (further down King St, near downtown Waterloo, where Loomis and Toombs Music is now).
Excellent buffet at noon with a very reasonable price (less than $6.00/person). More than 20 selections.
Great food at great prices :). The service was a little slow, however the food was well worth the wait! This is definately a great place to go to if you don't like "Canadian Chinese" type food. We had chow mein, beef in oyster sauce, and fried pot stickers. They were all delicious. I highly reccomend this place.
