Meet the owner

Mercedes Tripkovic and her husband Mana had modest aspirations for the café they opened at Danforth and Logan in 1991. Mercedes explains, “We called it Mocha Mocha because it originally was going to be a small coffee shop with just mocha cake and coffee.”

To Mercedes' surprise, their initial menu quickly grew. “We started small but there was a demand for more items,” she explains. “So we said, why don’t we add sandwiches?” She motions animatedly to the cornucopia of food behind a long glass counter to demonstrate how coffee, mocha cake and sandwiches are just the beginning.

Mercedes and Mana brought extensive experience to their new venture. After marrying in Peru (Mercedes’ home country), they opened a restaurant there specializing in crepes. Mercedes recalls, “Mana was the cook and I was the front of the house.” After moving to Canada in 1982, Mana managed restaurant franchises and Mercedes worked as a station chef at Movenpick-Yorkville. One day, Mana said to Mercedes, “You're working too hard. Why don’t we open a small café?”

Good mix of food

They have a bit of a different set up, you order your food then you sit down and get served. The place is cozy, and the food is good. The sandwiches especially are fantastic, and you have a good choice of bread. They also serve different coffees and teas, with organic coffee that's really good (I'm not a big coffee person).

Super fresh, inventive and comfortable. If you're looking for chicken wings or other typical restaurant fair, this aint the place for you. But if you are looking for a place that offers fresh, healthful food, artfully prepared, this is the place. I'm guessing that these guys are operating on a much slimmer margin than most restaurants because the prices are very reasonable and the food ingredients seem very high quality.

Amidst the Greek restaurants you’ll find this casual and fresh cafe. Combining many cultural influences, Mocha Mocha offers healthy options in a large variety. Juices, smoothies, crepes and chickpea guacamole are just a few favourites. The warm atmosphere is perfect for a dine-in lunch or a quick pick-me-up with coffee. While it's not strictly serving the area’s most common fares, the vibrant food fits the neighbourhood.

Toronto's Danforth espresso shops

You’re buying espresso beans to brew at home so you can save money and customize the flavour, but it’d be positively sinful not to indulge in some of the awesome fusion food while you’re here. They take a little bit of Japanese, Peruvian and Croatian cuisines and blend them together, creating an incredibly unique menu. Alternatively, you can pack up your food to go and eat it at home while your beans are brewing.
