Meet the owner

"My sister had always worn glasses, and her prescription is quite strong," says Kim Lam of her sister Van. "Maybe her interest in opticianry stems from there; she was the first one to study the discipline, and I followed shortly after."

Kim and Van grew up seeing their parents manage their own business and reap the benefits of their labour, which inspired the pair to, eventually, get in to business for themselves. "Our parents inspired us so much by operating their own small business; it was something we sought to accomplish, to follow in their footsteps."

After completing an opticianry program, Kim and Van worked in different optical stores for a while to gather experience. Then, when the opportunity to set up their own shop presented itself, the sisters jumped on it and Pink Eye Optical was born. "Our parents offered us their commercial space; we couldn’t possibly pass on that!"

"It's great to open a business with your sibling,'' Kim says. “Of course, family dinners aren't always family dinners anymore, but you learn to draw a line to separate these things. We're sisters first, and it's been a great experience so far; we work very closely."

Just off Ossington Avenue is Pink Eye Optical, family-owned and operated by two sisters in a former, decades-old convenience store that was owner by their parents. It’s a one-stop shop for eye tests, contact lenses, repairs and great eyewear designs. Got an old pair of specs? Drop them off here for the Third World Eye Care Society where they’ll be upgraded for people in developing countries.

Once you get over the infectious-sounding name you’ll be delightfully surprised by the selection of sunglasses at this Queen West boutique. The optical shop carries chic frames from Stella McCartney, Italia Independent and Dutch label KILSGAARD. You’ll also find special Asian-fit made-in-Italy sunglasses from Canadian designer Kay Tran. Most items are priced in the $200 range but watch out for summer sales, when you can snag select styles for under $100.
