Antonio Marin didn’t set out to be a restaurateur when he immigrated to Canada in 2001; he worked as a home inspector and was happily cooking in his spare time for friends and family. In the summers he and his wife, Maria, would host an annual backyard party — a fiesta that featured all of his favourite homemade Mexican dishes.
“Every year we had more and more and more guests, until finally we had about eighty!” Antonio describes. “Every year my friends would say to me ‘Why don’t you open a restaurant? Your recipes are really great!’ And so here I am.”
Today, Antonio and Maria are the proud owners of Maria Bonita, Oakville’s only authentic Mexican restaurant. Everything has changed for Antonio since he opened his colourful and cozy establishment in May of 2013. “This is my passion more than it is my career. I love to entertain people. I love good food. I’m so lucky: I get to do all that here!”
