My family and I went to The David Duncan restaurant on Saturday, April 23rd for lunch. This is my first time spending the time to write a negative review. The food was mediocre but my biggest complaint was the extremely poor and rude service. My dad ordered a bottle of wine and the waiters made us pay for it before we even finished our meal. None of the waiters smiled nor were they attentive. When we asked for more water they made us feel like we were a burden. The food here costs a lot so you would expect at least decent service. We will never come back and I will not recommend this place to anyone. Please tell your staff to smile and have some courtesy. Next time I want a steak, I will go to The Keg or Ruth's Chris steakhouse. At least I get decent service and food at a much more affordable price. When we got home from the restaurant, I spoke to Sophie (the bookkeeper) because the manager was busy and she did not apologize. She just defended the waiters. I hope that in the future your staff receive feedback as a way to improve your service. Most businesses actually appreciate feedback as a way to improve customer satisfaction and business practices.
We did read a lot of reviews about the David Duncan House and were a bit skeptical about dining here last week, We had some friends in from out of town and decided to come here for dinner,We did however drop by one afternoon and looked around and picked up a menu, We had a reservation for 6.30 pm, got seated in the lower level, nice round table in the corner, The servers were yes a bit old school but very kind and did answer all our questions.Ordered some cocktails and got some galic bread, pickles and cottage cheese, We started of with a caeser for 4 that was prepared table side, All I can say is that is was to die for,Crispy romaine rich thick salad dressing made from the scratch. Main dishes were Rack of lamb,Filet mignon,Dover sole, and Prime Rib,We also had a bottle of red shiraz that the server recommended for 39.95 that was a great complimant to our meals,I myself had the Dover sole and my wife the filet, All of our meals were very good, The vegetables were ok a bit bland, the baked and mashed potatos were good, The servers were around when needed and did look after us through our evening, We did not have any dessert just some coffee and tea, Our friends have beev raving about this place to all there friends and made it a point to tell us when ever they visit us we will be going to the David Duncan House , In my opinion the reataurant was great, Not over priced a good meal and experienced servers, It is a dining room from the past era that has been around for a long time so I guess they are donig something right, My wife and I will be visiting again soon as we enjoyed our eveing with our friends,
We went to the restaurant for Valentine dinner. The restaurant did some decoration according to the occasion. But, the docration was tacky and not classy. It did not match the buidling at all. The food was okay but not amazing. When we arrived and told them we had reservation, the girl just said, "Hang up your coat" without any "please". The tone was just like an elementary school teacher telling the students what to do. We were told to wait. Meanwhile, an older couple arrived and somebody rushed to them and said "Mr. so and so, we had a table ready for you" and brought them in. The staff were poorly and unprofessionally dressed with just casual sweaters and pants. We ordered something and the woman brought the wrong dish. When we told her, she seemed annoyed and did not say "sorry". When the bill came and they charged one item more, we told her and she looked annoyed again. The bill was on the table and we pointed at it. She said it was too far and she could not read it. So, we held it up to her and she took it back without apologizing. I will never go back to this restaurant and I do not recommend it to anybody.
Located close to highway 401 at the top of the city, David Duncan House is a historic building from the late 1800's decorated with European art deco from that era. The Good: The food is always good; I've had a few really good dishes but not great. I've never had to complain about the food the numerous times I've been here. The Bad: The atmosphere isn't really my cup of tea. I find it to be very old tacky European and very gaudy. The Ugly: Wait staff is sooooooo Snooty. The "Stink Eye" is definitely in full effect here (at least to me) all the time and I always feel like they have a superior complex. I never liked the Duncan House, but have dined here over a dozen times due to a handful of clients who request to meet here. It seems the food remains the same but the service gets worse and worse every time I come here. Now that I'm self-employed I will definitely not be coming back to the David Duncan House.
We used to go to the David Duncan House regularly to celebrate special occasions (anniversaries, birthdays, etc). Normally when my husband and I would go there, we tended to get a lot of "stink eye" (very dirty and judgmental looks) from the wait staff because we look young (we're in our 30s) compared to their average customer, but we tended to ignore it because we enjoyed the food and the ambiance. Since it was my birthday the other day, we decided to have dinner there and we brought our 2 year old son with us. Needless to say, the "stink eye" was even worse this time since we brought a toddler with us, but again, we chose to ignore it. Our son was quiet and ate happily until the main course arrived, when he started to fuss. While we were trying to calm him down, a waiter came to our table and said that someone had "complained" about the noise, so we resumed trying to get our son to quiet down, however, one minute later, the bill was placed on our table (I was barely halfway through my entree). We were appalled that the staff did absolutely nothing to try to rectify the situation and instead took the cowardly way out and felt it was appropriate to throw us out midway through our meal (they never asked if there way anything they could get for our son to keep him happy, nor did they offer us another location to sit at -- the restaurant was virtually deserted and there were many other places that we could have sat that would have been away from whomever complained). To top if off, as I was attempting to get our things together and get my son ready to leave, the wait staff just stood in the corner and glared at us the entire time until we left. I am 5 months pregnant and they didn't even offer to help us to leave! We will NEVER be returning to the Duncan House, and if you are under the age of 65, don't bother going there either unless you want to be discriminated against!

I had not been to the David Duncan house for a few years I do remember the last time, it was a positive experience ; However, I came one evening recently with a couple of family members, and it was a late supper. We were seated, right away the waiter rushed the order, and almost insisted we order drinks right away as well. Then, the dinner order had to be placed, which we did. I ordered a top sirloin, since they were sold out of Roast beef. The included appetizer was a basic salad, nothing to write home about. Nice garlic bread was served, with cottage cheese and pickles. The food arrived and was prepared as ordered, and was reasonably good. Not the best, but not bad either. Since it was obvious the waitstaff wanted to go home, and were not pleased about us showing up as late as we did, we settled the bill. As we were chatting, I observed one of the waiter who had served us (there were 3 in total actually) across the room, actually picking his nose very actively, and then flicking it to the ground. Oblivious to the fact he was being observed. Needless to say, after seeing this behavior, none of us felt very good about the meal we had just eaten. Hence, we will NEVER go back. That was utterly disgusting! Too bad, because the building itself is a very nice property.
Our family loves going here for special occasions. The food is great although a bit pricey.
We always go here for christmas dinner and the food is always so good and the service is great too. Nice wine selection. For large parties this restaurant is really nice. Would not suggest bringing younger children.
I have to admit, the ambiance is very comfortable. Unfortunately, the dinner was marred by bad service. My friend ordered a medium rare prime rib. Her prime rib came too well cooked, so she asked if she could have a medium rare piece. The waiter came back with another plate, basically with the same exact piece of prime rib, and told us that the piece of prime rib was closest to medium rare that was available. They didn't even offer her a different choice of a meal. After the waiter left the prime rib on our table, she smelled a dirty rag smell on her plate that wasn't even there before she sent her piece of meat back. She ended up not eating the prime rib. Even though the restaurant took the charge off, the evening has been ruined.
