Best places for a pint in Vancouver’s Hastings-Sunrise

Best places for a pint in Vancouver’s Hastings-Sunrise

The “dive” tag is self-effacing, because this heavy metal-loving establishment is a cozy room for anyone looking to raise a hefeweizen. Happy hour offers cheap draughts and Hey Y’alls, and their food menu offers Southern classics like cornbread and baked chicken wings. You're bound to hear some Black Sabbath pounding through the speakers, but you can also cue up local bangers through Jackalope’s Vancouver metal scene-saluting jukebox.

Best of Vancouver’s southern cuisine

Best of Vancouver’s southern cuisine

In the heart of East Vancouver, this self-proclaimed dive is loved for its rock-and-roll decor, rotating art shows, and southern comfort foods presented without pretention. Highlights include doughy cornbread, slow-cooked meats, and local beers for cheap. The two charming chefs (who are also best friends) add personal touches that make the spot homey, not kitschy. Fan favourites include the Jung Walker hot sauce – named after head chef Ryan Walker – and a working jukebox, which you’re welcome to play as long as you’re a fan of good old-fashioned rock and roll, of course.

Vancouver restaurants with unique washroom artwork

Vancouver restaurants with unique washroom artwork

This East Side eatery tends to remind people of their favourite bar back home. It has a comfortable and casual atmosphere with low lighting and easygoing staff. The walls leading up to the washrooms are wallpapered with tickets and posters from someone’s favourite metal shows, all pasted up with care. Similarly, the bathrooms are covered with a mod-podge display of cat and dog photographs cut out from magazines. Some of the animals have human heads, some have human bodies, but they’re all amazing.
