Meet the owner

Muralee Mariyadas learned to cook from her mother. As a young girl, she helped her to prepare traditional Sri Lankan dishes at their home in Ceylon. Now the proud owner of Vancouver’s Chutney Villa, Muralee serves the same recipes passed down from her ancestors to her restaurant’s loyal customers.

Vancouver’s only restaurant offering both South Indian and Sri Lankan cuisines, Chutney Villa is a hidden gem on Mount Pleasant’s bustling East Broadway. The modest storefront houses some of the city’s best-kept secrets: affordable meals (each item under $20), accommodating staff and Muralee’s bright smile.

As executive chef and front-end manager, Muralee has greeted every customer since the day she bought the restaurant in 2011. “I welcome them like it’s my home,” she says. “I love my customers and I know them well. Most know me, too.”

Food is okay. I h...

Food is okay. I have only tried veggie lunch special with parantha and did not like the veggie dish all that much. But it wasn't that bad either, I finished it somehow but what I really hate is the table settings and the service. Tables are placed are so close that I felt like I was at lunch with two strangers sitting on both sides. All of the booths were already reserved. Same with service, the lady talks as if she just had a fight with someone in the back. It could be her bad day or just her way of talking but it was rude.

Chutney Villa is one of Mount Pleasant’s most delicious hidden gems. Muralee Mariyadas grew up preparing traditional family recipes at her family home in Ceylon. Today, she excels at authentic South Indian and Sri Lankan delicacies such as masala dosas (crispy rice and lentil crepes), curries, biryani rice dishes and more. Try the kothu rotti, a unique Sri Lankan dish that features parata flat bread chopped with onion, green chilli and spices and fried with egg and meat. Delivery orders are placed through an easy-to-use online system ($20 minimum applies) and are subject to a $6.95 charge.
