The craft beer scene in B.C. continues to gain momentum with buzz-worthy breweries steadily popping up in regions across the province, including the Fraser Valley. Old Abbey Ales, which launched March 2016, was the first and largest to open in Abbotsford, and was followed by Ravens Brewing Company and Field House Brewing.

Owned by Don Piccolo and spearheaded by brewmaster Steve Black (formerly of Dead Frog), the brewery name echoes a Belgian abbey where the traditional monastic-style beer was established. While Old Abbey Ales may have started out offering these same European-style brews, they are now transitioning towards more West Coast-inspired beers.

Steve explains the market is smaller now for Belgiums noting in particular that Abbotsford's taste buds are different from Vancouverites. "Belgium flavours do take a special palate; it's a love-hate relationship. People either really love them or they really hate them."

As a lover of fine wines, classic whiskies and years of traditional brew training, I highly recommend this Craft brewery for unique and distinctive ales and beers.
